The Necessity of Love and Heartbreak for Prosperity
“A man has only one escape from his old self:
to see a different self in the mirror of some woman’s eyes”
- Clare Boothe Luce
Today, I want to share something deeply personal about a hard, yet beautiful lesson I learned as it relates to love and heartbreak.
But before I do, there’s something you have to understand about how I present myself online in my marketing — what you see and read here is the REAL me.
It’s not a caricature that we created and neither Raymond or I write behind a pen name. My real name is Fernando Ceballos and my friends really do call me “Ferny”.
Even Master Lee has taken to calling me “Ferny”, instead of “Mr. Ceballos”. It’s kinda cool, I must admit.
That being said, ever since leaving my corporate job 2 months ago, I’ve been reflecting quite a bit as to how I arrived at the place I’m at today.
I’m financially free, no longer deal with the famous L.A. traffic, I wake up and go to bed at whatever time I please and, truth be told, I’m very happy.
I have the best business partner a person can have in Raymond, who shows me he cares by kicking my ass when I need it and helping me become very rich. (I try to do my part as well.)
I’ve reflected quite a bit over the past week, and I was able to trace the source of this good fortune to one of the most painful and traumatic experiences of my life — a break up with a beautiful woman.
The Most Intense 4 Months of My Life
You see back in 2003/2004, about a year after graduating from MIT, returning to L.A. and entering the corporate world, I was miserable and lost.
I was making decent money, yet I still perpetually got myself into credit card debt and partied to numb the boring and disappointing experience of working in the Defense Industry.
And then while visiting Texas for my best friend’s wedding, I fell in love with an old college friend I got re-acquainted with during that weekend. The next 4 months was the most intense, passionate and torturous time of my life.
I was in L.A., she was in D.C. working within a very intense 2004 presidential campaign. Yet, I was committed to making it work and do whatever it took to being with her.
I was basically what one would call, “a love sick wuss”, willing to do anything for her and obscessed with talking to her everyday.
Like the old saying goes, “what goes up, must come down”. And as quickly as I fell head over heels in love, I came crashing down 100 times faster.
The pressures of the campaign, the distance, among other circumstances, caused her to abruptly end our realtionship. I was devastated.
I was 23 and had never before fallen that hard, that fast for someone.
Picking Up the Pieces
I spent the next 2 years picking myself off the ground, and trying to make sense of this very cruel life. I didn’t understand why I was so dependent on someone else to be happy.
Being nieve, I guess I assumed at the time that happiness is contigent on finding a mate with whom you can share a life with.
I wasn’t happy at my job, nor was I happy in L.A. at the time. I figured that since I was the happiest during this brief 4 month love affair, that must be where happiness lies.
About 2 years after the break up, a weird guy with a big head named Raymond invited me to his home to see “the plan”. (I had met Ray a year earlier at USC grad school, taking a class on Computer Systems Architecture — Yippie! )
On the night of “the plan”, life was breathed back into this lost soul’s body.
What I saw over the first month of being involved in network marketing, was hope that there may exist another way out of my unhappiness.
Initially, my interest in network marketing was the possibility of being able to leave my job and have the money to knock away the things I did not like about my life – one by one.
First my job.
Then I could leave L.A. and should the opportunity to find love again present itself, I wouldn’t have to deal with a long distance relationship.
I could simply get up and move. Simple right?
Deep Inner Game
Over the next year, I showed the plan and sponsored 17 people into my business, I was making some money, discovered the benefits of personal development and I read TONS of books on dating & relationships.
I was literally able to feel myself growing on the inside from all this. I grew more confident, learned quite a bit about people as a result of showing the plan and watching my downline (as if they were fish in a fish bowl) live the tough life of a network marketer.
I must say, even though it was frustrating watching my downline struggle, fail and eventually disappear, it was even more fascinating seeing it unravel — hearing their complaints, doubts, excuses, dealing with their negative friends/family and eventually giving up on their dreams.
To those that stuck around, I became a mentor and thanks to my obscessive study of marketing, business and personal development – I found myself in a solid footing to be that mentor.
I started finding purpose to my life in helping others better their lives.
My hope for financial freedom, became a certainty with only time keeping me from achieving it.
And most importantly, I discovered why it was I had fallen so hard and experienced so much pain back in 2004.
As I grew within myself, I was becoming happier and as a result, the pain of the heartbreak I felt in 2004 started to disappear.
Ambition and resolve, replaced my insecurities and sadness. And even my relationships – romantic, family and business – became more enjoyable and stable.
I started applying my leadership and new life skills to all aspects of my life.
As Mike Dillard would put it, I was becoming the “alpha”.
Why We Fall…
For the first time in my life, I was happy being alone. My dependency on others for a purpose driven life vanished.
It is entirely possible that none of my recent good fortune would have happened if I had not been forced to pick myself up from such a devastating heartbreak. I’m reminded of a quote from ‘Batman Begins’…
“Why do we fall? So we can learn to pick ourselves up.“
And that’s exactly it. The disappointments, heartbreaks and failures did not end once I found myself through my business… I simply learned how to recover quickly from them and continue moving forward.
So why is it that I am communicating this to you via a newsletter meant for network marketers. I’m sure you’d much rather learn about the latest in marketing, instead of my life’s drama.
Well, the truth is…
Your business will never grow if you don’t grow!
Your relationships won’t get better, until you become better!
Your financial situation won’t transform, until you do!
A few people over the course of building my business have accused me of being money hungry and greedy, because I wish to be wealthy. It’s an interesting statement when you think about it, because it’s usually the people who have the worst relationship with money that say that.
I recently attended a seminar where the instructor said, “Consider that the balance in your checking account is consistent with the character in your life.”
And I don’t mean this to be condescending, because some of the happiest people I’ve ever known were very poor, including my father. But they had a healthy relationship with money.
They weren’t in debt. They still managed to save for a rainy day. They can still buy presents for their kids on their birthday – albeit very modest ones — on top of being very happy.
I guess my point is, your relationship with your finances, your relationship with your girl friend, your relationship with your career, etc. is consistent with who you are and your maturity as a human being.
When you work on developing yourself — your finances, relationships and career become clearly measurable representations of who you are on the inside.
The Purpose of Pain
I don’t know what life holds for me in the future, but I do know one thing…
Pain and disappointments are not meant to destroy us, but are meant to guide us and let us know that something about who we are being at that moment needs to change.
And the level of pain, is representative of just how much you need to change and grow. If you are experiencing a lot of hurt in your life, business or relationships, look upon it as a blessing and learn to interpret that pain so you can begin to change what needs to change.
I wish I could tell you that the AMF course, could help you fix what’s going on inside you. If it did, we’d probably become very rich, very quickly like many of the self help gurus out there.
What it can help you with is in helping you mature and grow in developing and marketing your business. You may even be able to get away with only doing that and achieve financial freedom…
But be careful and make sure that your personal growth catches up with your finances. Otherwise, the opposite will happen and your finances, relationships and life will shrink back down to your true state as a person.
It’s no wonder that my business oscillated up and down for years, before becoming financially independent, alongside my friend and business partner Raymond.
Thinking back to 2003 and 2004, I’ve come a long way and it seems like an eternity since I cried myself to sleep for many of the nights during those years…
But I’m so grateful that it happened and wouldn’t dream of changing anything about those events. I simply hope that besides the marketing help you receive from us, that this letter has helped you discover something important about yourself.
Genuinely Yours,
Ferny Ceballos
Why Your Funded Proposal is NOT Working …
The Truth About Why Lead Generation Systems
are No Longer Working in Today’s Saturated Market…
“Many of these theories have been killed off only when some decisive experiment
exposed their incorrectness… Thus the yeoman work in any science… is done by
the experimentalist, who must keep the theoreticians honest.”
- Michio Kaku, Theoretical Physicist
Hopefully, I won’t anger too many of you, but I think the writing is on the wall and this needs to be said.
Over the past couple of years, ‘automated MLM systems’ have taken the MLM industry by storm. Initially, what made a ‘funded proposal’ so attractive was that it offered us a much easier and better alternative to the “traditional prospecting” methods.
Finally! No more “3 foot rule”, cold calling, buying leads, home meetings, hotel meetings, and everything else that our uplines said was part of their “system”.
We were watching guys like Mike Dillard, Daegan Smith, Ty Coughlin, Jay Kubassek, among others, growing massive downlines almost overnight, without needing to talk to a single person.
In fact, Daegan Smith even gave himself the title of “The King of Never Calling a Single Lead”.
Ah, those were the good ol’ days…
Since then, the online MLM market has become saturated with systems promising things like:
-
“No selling”
-
“The system does the work for you”
-
“We close sales for you”
-
“No phone skills, needed”
-
“No prospecting”
-
“Build your downline on autopilot”
I have to admit, I was sold on ‘attraction marketing’ for these same reasons. I was tired of coaching and wasting my time with people who had no business, being in business for themselves. I needed to figure out a way to filter through the “losers” and “tire-kickers” to get to the real leaders who were going to build this thing.
Then Magnetic Sponsoring walked into my life and forever transformed my business and life. Raymond and I went on to create the ‘Attraction Marketing Formula’ based on the teachings from Magnetic Sponsoring, but geared towards Google Marketing and some of the “techie” stuff.
But then we started noticing something…
The MLM Pendulum is Swinging Back the Other Way
Recently, I had some pretty eye-opening conversations with fellow networkers involved with some of the most popular “turn-key” systems out there. (You’d recognize these systems immediately if I mentioned them by name.) And I have to admit, it was ‘deja-vu’ as I was listening to them.
It was as if I had gone back in time 3 years, before Magnetic Sponsoring was released, and I was listening to the struggles, trials and tribulations of your “Uncle Bob’s MLM”.
“I’m not making any money…”
“No one is joining my team…”
“I’ve lost all my savings…”
“I’m not getting any upline support…”
These conversations confirmed the suspicions I’ve had floating around my head for a long time…
Traditional Methods are Making a Comeback
Now, before you get upset and start sending me hate mail, allow me to explain exactly what is happening.
First of all, NO you DON’T have to go back to cold-calling or prospecting at Starbucks and frisking people for a “dream”. We already know that’s not going to work.
But there’s a subtle trend I’ve been watching happen over the past year.
The systems who were promising “turn-key” businesses, with “no selling” started having live training calls on…
PROSPECTING OVER THE PHONE?
Huh?
What are guys like Todd Falcone, Joe LoBalsamo, and Mark Wieser doing on these live training calls for “automated systems”?
These guys are old school. These guys make like 40 dials per day to grow their businesses. What do we need them for?
This is the Internet Age, baby! Prospecting calls are like soooo 1980’s…
…or are they?
The Ultimate MLM Advantage
The bad news is that if you are expecting to build your business from your computer without talking to anyone, you’re screwed.
The good news is that if you are willing to pick up the phone and talk to people, it will give you the ultimate competitive advantage in today’s saturated “mlm systems” market.
The reason these “old school” trainers are watching a rise in their businesses, is because at the end of the day, people want to talk to people. If they are going to join a business with a $2000 entry point or buy a high-end information product for $500, they want to know there’s a real person behind the system and someone there to help them.

That’s the whole reason why Web 2.0 is so huge now. People want to interact with other people, especially when it involves taking out their wallet.
The fact of the matter is, if you are interacting with your customers or prospects via chat, email, forums or by phone, you have a much, much, much higher chance of getting them to buy or join your business.
It’s that simple.
But there are also some very crucial things you should be doing to ensure your success in a web 2.0 world.
Traditional Prospecting 2.0
First, you want to create as many opportunities for your prospects to contact you for support. Here are a few simple things you can do:
-
Put your phone number on all your capture pages, emails and sales pages.
To protect your privacy, I recommend you use a Business Voicemail service, where calls are forwarded to you via an 800 number and only after the caller has identified themself. (If you want to learn more about this, call me at

866-834-3625
so you can see it in action and I can give you the purchase details.) -
Use a real email address when delivering your autoresponder messages.
-
Provide AIM, Google chat or Skype details, so people can send you messages.
-
Have an “Ask Us” form on your website, which allows people to submit questions via your website.
-
Have a guestbook form on your website, where prospects can say “I was here”. Have them provide an email address when they sign. This gives you an opportunity to start a conversation by emailing them.
-
Send personal emails to as many of your leads as you can, every day. People know the difference between automated emails and real emails. Take 20 minutes a day to start a dialogue with new subscribers.
-
Here’s the scary one – have your prospects provide their phone numbers when they opt in and CALL YOUR PROSPECTS!
Now that last one is probably not making your feel warm and fuzzy, but it’s actually the most important one. This is where the training from guys like Todd Falcone, Joe LoBalsamo and Mark Wieser come in.
The great thing about using your own ‘funded proposal’ is that the prospects on your list requested information from you first. Your calls will be primarily consultative in nature. You are not calling them to pitch your business, but just to help with what they requested information on.
However, it is inevitable that people will eventually ask about your business with questions like:
“What company are you with?”
“How much money are you making?”
“How do you market?”
Your answers to these questions will be the difference between having ZERO success and growing a huge and profitable business. That’s why investing in courses like Blackbelt Recruiting will make a huge impact in your business, but also on you personally and how people view you through your everyday interactions.
The Inner Game of MLM
Finally, as you start to develop your phone skills, and prospecting skills, you’ll start noticing that you’ll start attracting leaders to you. All forms of your communication (email, copywriting and speaking) will start exuding this ‘mystical’ magnetism and people will be naturally drawn to you.
And the real kicker is that you’ll start attracting leads to you in the OFFLINE world, as a result of your new magnetic personality!
As you start seeing the cost of PPC and advertising rise, your ability to acquire a lead using more “traditional” means, will be very easy and FREE. It’s the most ironic thing I’ve experienced since I took my business online.
So the truth about all these “automated turn-key” systems, is that they are not what they initially claim to be. The system can be a very powerful tool, but it’s not your entire business – unless you happen to own the system.
At the end of the day, the advantage that you can have over another rep using the same “automated system” will be YOU, INC.
They already know what the system can do for them. Now they are going to want to know what YOU can do for them — that’s the difference maker.
To help you get through this process, my buddy Joe is an expert on internet prospecting and figuring out, which people on your list are most likely to join your business. He’ll be doing a FREE LIVE training call, exclusively for AMF subscribers on Monday, March 17th.

Copywriting Grab Bag
Wow! I just browsed through Ben Settle’s Copywriting Grab Bag website and I was totally floored by the amount of FREE content available.
I literally spent the last hour downloading free interviews and reports he has available.
I believe Eben Pagan referred to this as “moving the free line”.
The internet marketing niche is definitely becoming more competitive and the way marketers have managed to stay competitive as the internet expands is by offering more free value, in hopes of garnering the majority of the profits from the backend.
What this also does is it allows the prospect to qualify the “guru” based on his free content. I’m seeing this method being employeed more and more, including by myself. And anyone that has opted-in to my newsletter knows this.
And with this growing trend, the only people who should really feel threatened are the “fake gurus” — he guys trying to build a list with the little chunk of knowledge they managed to suck away from someone else’s ebook.
And I know Ben is no slouch. He was recently hired by Mike Dillard as his head copywriter for Magnetic Sponsoring. And Mike Dillard is one of the leading copywriters in the internet marketing industry, so that speaks volumes.
They’re actually gonna be doing a 3-part tele-clinic on Copywriting, which I’m looking forward to. Two of the best copywriters in the industry on one call, delivering what I expect to be the best copywriting content I’ve ever received.
I’ve got my seat and so should you, if you really want to set yourself apart from other marketers and be able to offer REAL value to your list.

If for some reason you can’t make it to the tele-clinic, you’d be a fool not to download the copywriting interview recordings Ben has available.

Online Marketing Concepts Part II
(Read the first part of this article, titled The Killer Secret to MLM Prospecting…)
You see, while the traditional form of building a network marketing business may work for some, odds are, it’s not working for you. Much like yourself, I’ve gone down that traditional network marketing route – sponsor two who each sponsors two more etc.
While I give many thanks and much credit to who I am today to all that training and that MLM school of hard knocks, I think there are other ways of building a multi level marketing business. Ways that capitalize on the technology available today to both you and me.
So then how do you still get to be the measly 5% who actually make it in the multi level marketing industry?
It’s about taming the “wild wild web“. Let me break this down into 5 major marketing concepts your upline have no clue about.
Copywriting Trumps “Pretty Pages” Anyday
I just got an email from a business partner about a 9 Landing page split-test contest which ended last month.
An SEO Company named SEOmoz held a contest and invited people to design landing pages to do two things:
- Capture People’s Information
- Convert Those People to a Sale
Out of 9 finalist, including some very pretty and “professional” designs, the top 2 performing landing pages were:
- Classic Long Copy Sales Letter (260 Opt-ins, 73 Sales)
- Short “Above the Fold” Capture Page (365 Opt-ins, 69 Sales)
Here’s a shot of the results:

Jonathan Mendez, who helped with the contest was interviewed and as the last question he was asked:
Q: Do you have 3-4 top tips that you could share on landing page design and testing that you find to be exceptionally beneficial?
A: Sure, how about I give you three for design and three for testing:
Design
Simplify everything Reinforce intentions Limit choicesTesting
Let the data end your test, not your calendar Understand results by segment Technology is only as good as the marketer using it
Very interesting stuff on the power of effective copy and simplicity over lot’s of bells and whistles and ‘artsy fartsy’ designs.
In the FREE Attraction Marketing Bootcamp, I go over Capture Page and Sales Page design in detail, where I strongly encourage designers to baseline their pages first with ONLY copy (words). Then after you have winning copy, improve the looks while testing any changes. Sometimes adding cosmetic upgrades to a site will actually lower convertions, so always test.

Remember, marketing is the one thing everyone has an opinion about, but where few actually know what they are talking about.
