Last Thursday, I had the privilege of attending Altitude’s Million Dollar Marketing Makeover seminar with Eben Pagan.  If you don’t know who Eben Pagan is, well…. let’s just say that Mike Dillard and hundreds of other top tier marketers are his marketing students.

If that doesn’t get your attention, he goes by the pen name “David DeAngelo” in the Dating Advice niche and generates over $20 Million per year in sales from DoubleYourDating.com.

Well as part of this exclusive opportunity, Eben was putting attendees in the “hot seat” live on stage.  He would literally bring someone on stage, flash their website on the big screen and redesign your marketing strategy, your copywriting, your site design and help take your marketing from ZERO to $MILLIONS in under 15 minutes.

Well, I was one of these lucky entrepreneurs who got put in the “hot seat” and it was badass!

Eben normally charges $10,000 for the same type of marketing makeover in private, so getting torn apart in public was well worth the monetary savings.

Initially, things went well.  He analyzed my sales page and complimented it on the format and then proceeded to ask me questions about my market, the techniques I use in my market, and after about 5 minutes he got into tearing my sales page apart.

After he worked through my headline, he went into what I should put into the body and off the top of his head started telling me EXACTLY what he would like to see in my sales letter… and about 30 seconds into him speaking I started getting goosebumps…

I had a thought run through my head, “Holy Cow! Eben Pagan is writing my sales letter…”

So I made sure not to open my mouth and let Eben talk uninterrupted for as long as he wanted to go.  He then stopped after a couple of minutes and asked me if there was anything I wanted to add.

I responded, “Nope.  You pretty much just wrote my sales letter”.

His reply, “Then I guess we’re done here then”.

We shook hands and I left the stage to applause and dozens of people wanted to get my business card. (I guess I somehow impressed them with my silence).

Although it would be impossible for me to explain the entire methodology Eben used to write my sales letter in a short article, he did give me the most important secret he uses in his copywriting and I wanted to pass that along to you.

During the initial exchange he asked, “What’s your best traffic source?”

I replied, “Google Adwords is hands down the most consistent and reliable.”

“What’s your best Google Adwords technique, which has worked best for you and which any network marketing newbie could use and get immediate results?” Eben asked.

I answered his question and he said, “Put that into your sales letter.  Put the best technique you have and give it away for free within the copy of your sales letter.”

Now I have to admit I was reluctant to even tell Eben Pagan about my technique, much less give it away to everyone who visits my website.  But that was exactly what he was asking me to do.  I was a bit concerned about giving away my ‘bread and butter’ technique, but then the light bulb went off in my head.

He explained that by putting your best technique first, which any newbie can use, you are accomplishing a number of things, which 99.99% of sales letters fail to do:

1)      You are getting the prospect to read your sales letter, because you are embedding valuable content among your sales presentation.

2)      You are gaining their trust and gaining credibility, because the prospect will be thinking, “Gee, if this is what he’s giving away, I can only imagine the value I’ll be getting if I paid him to show me more.”

3)      Psychologically, you are instantly turning yourself into “their guru”, because among a sea of ‘snake oil salesmen’, you have given them something they can implement immediately, get results and your prospect will have a natural tendency to come back to you for more, forever. (Much like I come back to Mike, while he gets to siphon more money from my wallet with every new promotion.)

What made that session even more amazing was that I knew Eben was showing me how to do something he, himself, uses in his marketing for Double Your Dating – a $20 Million company.

As my friend Jim Yaghi correctly pointed out, in David DeAngelo’s sales page, Eben gives away a technique which any guy can use to instantly know if a girl is ready to be kissed or not. He calls it the “Kiss Test”.

Eben was telling me to use my version of the “Kiss Test”, which offers incredible value, immediate results and is easy to do.

Someday, the things I say are going to get me in some real trouble like it almost did a couple of days ago…

As you know, I was pretty over-the-top after I heard that Mike Dillard was doing a 3-night training call series on copywriting.

The reason I was ticked was because I thought he was done.

I thought Mike had taught and said everything there was to teach about network marketing. He was suppose to go on a back-packing trip and never come back!

  • I’ve read his Magnetic Sponsoring course, which gives you a turn-key MLM cash cow and lead generator.
  • I dove into his bible of a program, Traffic Formula, which showed me how to build a completely automated prospecting system, whose concepts my partner and I actually managed to introduce into the Martial Arts industry.
  • In Black Belt Recruiting (no longer available) I listened for hours and hours as he and Mark Wieser disected the psychology of sponsoring and showed me how to sponsor prospects as easily as a hot knife cuts through butter.
  • And to top it all off, I was only one of 15 students selected to review the TOP SECRET MLM System Formula (not available), which essentially shows you how you can march into your MLM company’s executive offices and have them build you a fully automated, custom MLM replicated sponsoring machine to grow your downline and pay you tens of thousands in royalties just for coming up with the idea.

As you can see, one would assume it was over. One would assume that he’s taught me everything I need to know to conquer the MLM world. And that’s exactly what Raymond and I were in the process of doing.

But there was something missing…

He left out one little thing, which basically makes everything I mentioned above obsolete — as stupid as it sounds, the skill he’d been withholding was his ability to persuade, seduce, sponsor and sell using only his written words - selfishly keeping it to himself.

So of course when I received a “but wait, there’s more!” message from Mike, I was ready punch a hole in the wall.

And in all honesty, it’s normal for YOU to be skeptical and angry and blame the “guru” for sucking you of your hard earned money, and leaving you to alone to sink or swim after you invested in his (her) latest course.

I Would Actually Bad-Mouth Mike, Behind his Back

I’m not proud of it, but I’ve done it. In fact, I use to talk crap over a cold one with my business partners, frustrated because things weren’t going the way I wanted them to… blaming him and the “other gurus” for “leaving something out”.

In the meantime, every sales letter he sent out sucked me in like a hoover. Oh, the irony.

Nevermind the fact that I was completely avoiding responsibility for my own actions (or lack there of). Nevermind the fact that I had seen other people take the same information and soar with it.

I was full of it!

I finally decided to take massive action and we’ve been working on some awesome ventures with Master Taejoon Lee of Hwa Rang Do, doing quite a bit of affiliate marketing, mentoring and transforming my MLM organization and of course, introducing the world to the Attraction Marketing Formula, (not to mention many, many, many failures in between).

But no matter my success and experience, I will always look at the next offer with great skepticism, much like you will. It’s normal to ask, “do I really need this new course?” “Do I really need to give this millionaire any more of my money?”

So of course, when you let that little negative voice in your head lead the way, you tend to do some pretty silly things. But sometimes it can be fun, so I let “It” lead this time and write the email for me. “It” blasted a few harsh words and I went along for the ride.

But there was just one small problem…

Mike Dillard is on my email list and sent me a reply that very same morning!

Holy Cow! I thought he was going to throw a couple thousand bucks to some desperate MLM’ers and have me whacked for saying that I wanted to “beat him senseless”.

But it turns out, Mike wasn’t mad at all. He was actually very cool and appreciative that I had supported him for as long as I had — as a customer, as an affiliate, and as a student…

So now that I’m composed, squared things away with Mike, and “It” (the voice in my head) is in check, I want to be straight with you…

D-d-d-d-d-d-did I stutter?!? You heard (read) me right.

At this point, I’m pretty fed up and there’s nothing I can do about it. At least not legally…

Look, the fact of the matter is that just about everything that is fundamental about marketing I have learned from one person. Everything I’ve learned to be essential to your network marketing and online marketing business, I learned from a multi-millionaire named Mike Dillard.

Wow! I just browsed through Ben Settle’s Copywriting Grab Bag website and I was totally floored by the amount of FREE content available.

I literally spent the last hour downloading free interviews and reports he has available.

I believe Eben Pagan referred to this as “moving the free line”.

The internet marketing niche is definitely becoming more competitive and the way marketers have managed to stay competitive as the internet expands is by offering more free value, in hopes of garnering the majority of the profits from the backend.

I just got an email from a business partner about a 9 Landing page split-test contest which ended last month.

An SEO Company named SEOmoz held a contest and invited people to design landing pages to do two things:

  1. Capture People’s Information
  2. Convert Those People to a Sale

Out of 9 finalist, including some very pretty and “professional” designs, the top 2 performing landing pages were:

  1. Classic Long Copy Sales Letter (260 Opt-ins, 73 Sales)
  2. Short “Above the Fold” Capture Page (365 Opt-ins, 69 Sales)

  • Simplify everything
  • Reinforce intentions
  • Limit choices

Testing

  • Let the data end your test, not your calendar

  • Technology is only as good as the marketer using it

Very interesting stuff on the power of effective copy and simplicity over lot’s of bells and whistles and ‘artsy fartsy’ designs.

In the FREE Attraction Marketing Bootcamp, I go over Capture Page and Sales Page design in detail, where I strongly encourage designers to baseline their pages first with ONLY copy (words).  Then after you have winning copy, improve the looks while testing any changes.  Sometimes adding cosmetic upgrades to a site will actually lower convertions, so always test.

How To Quickly Move People Through Your Magic Slot Machine™ and Create NEW Customers

Question from an AMF Subscriber:
“What’s the fastest way to attract prospects and move them from tire kickers to distributors or customers?”

I’m glad someone asked this question, because I realize that we live in an “instant gratification” world and some of you may start “missing the forest for the trees” as you start building their “pipeline”.

The short answer is that since we are trying to build a business of relationships (a people business), that really can’t be rushed beyond the need of the prospect on your list.

Note that the question above came from a network marketer, but this lesson applies to ALL industries, including real-estate, insurance, sales, law, medical, martial arts, etc.

When you look at what most people do in these industries, you start to realize that they try to operate a lot like speed-dating — serially working through leads and moving from one prospect to the other without bothering to try to retain or build a relationship. And much like speed dating, you may have to run through ALOT of people to find your new customer, client or distributor (date).

The Value of Duplication

Now this might produce some results if you are a skilled sales person, but this is NOT at all duplicatable and will eventually lead to your burn-out.

One of the reasons why I love network marketing and direct sales so much is because it’s inherently intended to be a business based on leverage by building an organization. But you’ll never be able to grow a large organization if you can’t duplicate your efforts.

Salesmanship is NOT duplicatable. But just about everyone has the ability to make new friends — especially if your marketing is responsible for the introductions.

If you are smart, you should figure out if there is a way for you to duplicate your business through others to create leverage, regardless of the industry. I know real-estate has made strides in implementing level based commission structures to encourage “win-win” collaboration among agents.

The Leverage is in the List

And the current project Raymond and I have going with Hwa Rang Do® is to duplicate the West Coast Hwa Rang Do® Headquarter’s marketing methods across the globe to bring more visibility and brand Hwa Rang Do® as the PREMIER martial art in the world. Period. But we are doing it one prospect at a time, using the internet and various forms of leverage.

The first form of leverage you should start working on are relationships — meaning start building your list.

The Attraction Marketing Formula™ is designed to show you exactly how to create an automated system which will eventually build you a list of hundreds, thousands or even millions of subscribers for you to stay in constant communication with and give them as much time as they need to get to know you.

  • Will some people want your services immediately? Absolutely. Especially if they have a bad back and are looking for a chiropractor. ;)
  • Will some people stick around and methodically scrutinize your knowledge, background and integrity? Yes. Gotta love the analytical types.

  • Will some people join you or become a customer after a few days? Sure. They just need enough information to make a decision. They decide when that is.

  • Will some people remain on your list, but never take action. YES! I love not having to deal with tire-kickers.

  • Will some people unsubscriber? You bet! Good riddance.

Their actions will depend very much on many variables, which is why you want to have a list and a means to communicate with that list often so you have an opportunity to have all the prospect’s requirements and variables satisfied.

For example, if you are working on building your list and adding value to that prospect, pretty soon you will hit the 1,000 subscriber mark. Now imagine if your conversion rate from prospect to customer was 1%.

If you were serially working through leads (like most people), going through 980 people to find 10 customers… that would be a nightmare. Sure that might be enough to run a profitable business, but it will destroy your life. It would also mean you need to work on your sales skills.

But if you were converting 1% of the 1,000 subscribers per month and constantly replenishing the list with new prospects, 10 customers per month on a virtually automatic basis is a dream come true. Your main role would be to answer the phone and be a friendly voice to the person that calls.

However, this may take some time initially since everyone starts their list at ZERO and a 1% conversion of ZERO is ZERO.

Case Study: Traditional Martial Art, Strict and Tough Master, Complex Techniques and One Hell of a Work-Out!

A great real-life example of this was the work Raymond and I started working on for Master Lee at the beginning of this year. We launched the Hwa Rang Do® Bootcamp newsletter back in February and waited…. and waited…. and waited….

We were getting lots subscribers via traffic from Google AdWords, YouTube and word-of-mouth referrals but no one was walking through the door. I believe in the 1st couple of months one guy called and expressed interest in trying a class.

Raymond and I were starting to get discouraged, but Master Lee having been in business for a while knew something was brewing under the surface.

This past month, the West Coast Hwa Rang Do® Headquarters had ‘buddy-week’ — a special week where the school opens to the public for friends, family and strangers to come try a class. An announcement was sent out to the subscriber list and the students were encouraged to invite people, using the bootcamp newsletters and online videos to help describe this rich and complex art.

Over the course of 3 days, 37 new people walked through dojang doors and took a beginner’s class led by Chief Master Taejoon Lee. The dojang was tearing at the seems with huge beginner’s classes. At least 8 of those people became students, with more planning on signing up in the near future. (They go back in the pipeline to continue the relationship if they don’t sign-up.)

What happened that week, which didn’t happen back in February?

Our marketing had hit critical mass. There were finally enough people on the list, and students were excited about showcasing the FREE online instructional content and videos to their friends, which made this ‘buddy week’ the most successful in the 13 years Master Lee has owned his business.

Also, I just noticed recently that one of the 27 Hwa Rang Do® videos we had put up on YouTube just went over the 40,000 views mark. That’s 40,000 more people who now know about Hwa Rang Do®, whom didn’t know about it prior to February from just one FREE online video posting.

Our videos are being circulated all over the web and the viral spread has begun. Let them come to us. That’s what Attraction Marketing is all about.

We had proven that the list building techniques we had learned in network marketing could be applied anywhere! Even with a virtually unknown traditional martial art with a 1,800 year history.

So if you find yourself ever telling yourself that these methods aren’t for you, remember the wise words of Henry Ford:

“Whether you think you can or your can’t, you’re probably right.”
